Among the many fascinating traits of the Chilean culture, ranging as one of the highest interest of its people, is football, known as soccer. If you too are a soccer addict, mingle with the locals, and maybe they will invite you to play, watch a game. Don’t be afraid to participate in some of the lengthy and passionate discussions about players and teams taking place at the bar pretty much anywhere in the country.
Football was imported in the late 19th century to Chile by the British, who were mostly working in the construction of the railway system. This British heritage is reflected in many of the country’s team names, with teams such as the Santiago Wanderers, Everton, and Rangers.
The game’s popularity grew rapidly among all parts of the Chilean population, and by the 1940’s almost every major town in the country could boast its own team and stadium. Chile’s importance as a football nation was recognized internationally in 1962 when the country held the World Cup and finished third in the competition. Although it does not quite enjoy the same recognition as Brazilian or Argentinean football, Chileans are just as passionate for "the beautiful game" as their neighbors.
Over the years, Chile’s football team has had a quite agitated history. After a fake complaint by the team’s goalkeeper that he was hit by a missile from the crowd during a match in the 1990 World Cup, Chile was banned from the 1994 competition. They proudly returned in 1998, and even if they did not go as far as they could have wished in the competition, their place in the last 16 was still a source of great pride to the Chilean people. The last few years, however, have seen a serious demise in the fortunes of Chile’s national football team.
Going to watch a football match, especially international or a clasico (local derby) is truly a unique and unforgettable experience. Dance, sing and wave along the supporters and soak up the cheerful and thrilling atmosphere that characterizes soccer games in Chile.
