Almost everyone has heard of Costa Rica, which is fast becoming a top retired expat destination, but not as many are very familiar with the country itself and all that it has to offer: from gorgeous beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts that offer excellent fishing opportunities, to pristine rainforests and active volcanoes there is surely something for everyone in this Central American country.

But with so many varied destinations inside the country, it is important to know when to go to really get the most out of your time and money. The tourist season in Costa Rica is from late November to late April, which coincides with the dry season; prices tend to be higher and availabilities tend to be scarce. There is also another mini tourist season during June and July, during which time visitors from North America and Europe take advantage of their summer vacations and head to Costa Rica.

The rainy season in Costa Rica is from May to mid-November, and during this time prices are usually much lower and there are much fewer visitors, allowing for a more authentic Costa Rican experience. Unfortunately, transportation during this time can be difficult due to the rain and the ensuing muddy conditions of many of the roads.

Depending on what you plan on doing in Costa Rica, you may find a particular time of the year more suitable than others. If surfing is your thing, the waves are best on the Pacific coast starting in June and peaking in September and October; on the Caribbean side the waves are best from November to May. Sea turtles nest on the Caribbean side from July to October, with the most active season occurring in July and August.

Costa Rica also has abundant fowl and fish for your observation or consumption, but the seasons vary depending on what species you’re after on your Costa Rica fishing vacation. In any case, you should now have at least a general idea of when to visit and what activities you might like to do!

This guide to visiting Costa Rica was written by a Costa Rica travel expert at Costa Rica For Less, here to help you design your customized Costa Rica fishing vacations.
