Located in the Northwestern part of Costa Rica, about 90 kilometers from San Jose, stands the impressive Arenal Volcano, one of the most renowned attractions of the country. Believed to be among the ten most active volcanoes in the world, the Arenal reaches a dizzying height of over 5,360 ft (1,635m), and has a cone shape with a 460 ft wide crater (about 140m).

Almost 7,000 years old, the Arenal Volcano is actually considered as a relatively young volcano. Volcanoes are formed over thousands of years and result from the natural shifting processes of earth’s crust. Since the Arenal is among the most active volcanoes, it is under permanent surveillance, as scientists try to predict the likelihood of a volcanic eruption.

Although the exact date of a volcanic eruption is still unknown, there are concurring factors that can be monitored, such as seismicity, gas emissions and ground deformation. The Arenal volcano is in constant activity, with frequent eruptions, but so far, nothing has rivaled the deadly level of the 1968 eruption.

However, travelers can still observe ash columns, underground rumbling and orange lava flows, as well as sudden small explosions, which occur on a daily basis. Almost every night, the volcano offers an spectacular display of lights and explosions to the courageous travelers who dare to brave the danger.

Thanks to the explosions, the area around the volcano is also filled with beautiful hot springs from where visitors can enjoy stunning views of the volcano as they relax they sore muscles. The Volcano is located in the Arenal National Park, which covers over 12,000 ha, and is also home to the dormant yet majestic Chato Volcano. There are numerous hiking trail and observation points in the park, as well as all kinds of adventure activities available, such as canopy tours, white-water river rafting, hiking and more.
