Considered as a New Wine Region, Chile actually boasts a long history in winemaking, dating back to the 16th century, when the Spanish conquerors brought vitis vinifera, a species of grapevine native to the Mediterranean region, with them and introduced viticulture in the country.

Later on in the 19th century, new varieties of wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were brought to Chile. But worldwide recognition of the quality of Chilean wines only arose in the 1980’s after the introduction of stainless steel fermentation tanks and oak barrels for ageing, which drastically increased the quality.

Over 20 varieties of grapes are grown in Chile, mainly combining Spanish and French varieties, although in the more recent years, Chilean winemakers have been trying their hand at experimentation, sometimes with fantastic results. The most renowned Chilean wines are generally Cabernet Sauvignons, for which the country’s winemakers have developed a unique flare, creating an easy to drink wine with soft tannins and delicious flavors of mint, olives, and smoke. In the past years, Chilean wines have been ranking relatively high in international wine competitions all over the world.

Chile boasts a large number of winemaking regions each featuring their own varieties, some of which have earned a well deserved worldwide reputation over the years. One of the most famous winemaking regions is the Elqui Valley, which enjoys a perfect climate for viticulture, with year round clear skies and sunny days. The region has long been known for its fruit and Pisco production, but wineries have recently started exploring these fertile lands. One of the best varieties produced in the Elqui Valley is Syrah or Shiraz, a relatively new comer, which when produced in the cooler climate, takes on an exquisite spicy and complex aroma.

So if you are a connoisseur or even just an enthusiast, why not plan a journey following the path of Chile’s best wines? You will without a doubt be treated to some excellent varieties, and will also have the chance to taste some of Chile’s best dishes to accompany your tastings.
